Back-up Plans

  By Petre Thomas

Many college students major in the field where they plan to work and minor in something else that might benefit them. That is not the case for Roykeisha “Keke” Rockette, a 22-year-old from Watervalley, Miss. Rockette is a journalism major, but she is minoring in theatre. Rockette plans to use her theatre minor and have her journalism major as something to fall back on.
“I have no intention of even working in the field (of journalism), I just have that much confidence,” Rockette said. “ But I have that as my backup.”
Rockette started performing around the age of three, but said she believed it started even earlier than that.
“I feel like it was a prenatal passion,” Rockette said.
Rockette did her first play as the narrator of Cinderella wore Combat Boots, as part of a community theatre. She realized that theatre is what she wanted to do after she preformed in the school talent show.
“The first time I preformed at my school talent show, everyone reacted to me in a certain way,” Rockette said. “I was like wow this is what I
want to do.”
Rockette said she believed that having the journalism degree could come in handy, but ultimately, she still plans to procure her dream of being on stage.
“I feel like journalism is not only going to further my intelligence, but further my people skills,” Rockette said.  “I like to write and have a skill for writing, But I feel like acting and singing was more of a natural talent, so I did not want to go to school for just that.”
