Success isn't always a Championship Ring

With the recent Super Bowl victory by former Ole Miss Rebel Eli Manning, it’s comforting for us to look how far our Rebel athletes can go after they leave Oxford. However, we seldom take the time to see how far our athletes here have already come.
Sophomore Kenyotta Jenkins, 20, of Holly Springs, MS, has had a passion for Basketball since she was a kid. “I started playing with my brothers when I was younger,” says Kenyotta, “I loved it and have been playing ever since.” She continued playing and getting better throughout her years of school always striving to be abetter player.
“Playing basketball just came naturally to me. Nobody really taught me. I would go outside and play on my own and try to imitate what I would see other players do on TV.” Her commitment would help her team at Pottscanp High reach the North Half State Tournament. Tragically, their championship ambitions would end here. “Losing hurt so much. We weren’t just playing the other team but the referees as well.”
Though Kenyotta may not have won state that year her story is still a success story. Kenyotta was offered a full scholarship to play for Ole Miss and the rest is history. The Ole Miss girls basketball team has benefitted ever since.
“My mom was hoping I’d major in dance but she’s 100% behind me and my choice in basketball.” After college Kenyotta hopes to teach high school history or maybe play basketball overseas. Maybe one day, a new generation of players will be watching her and trying to imitate her moves when they see her on TV.
