The 19-year-old king is a frequent long boarder who spends his time outdoors, and traveling around the globe. Traveling to foreign countries can be viewed as dangerous especially if you are going on outdoor expeditions. In Oscars case he would only travel a couple hundred miles from his home on a family river rafting trip to see this kind of danger.
The Guadalupe river just outside San Antonio is a river known for its river rafting expeditions and tours. The river hosts many business's which have trained guides who will take your friends and family on an exciting adventure down the Guadalupe. The expert guides discuss warnings along the river before the expedition begins; including rapids, trees, snakes, and other animals.
The King family set out on July 8 of this past summer to enjoy a family outing river rafting. After being briefed by the guide about safety and dangers the family set out down the river, "After hearing this guide tell me we were going to have fun I had 0 worries of anything bad happening," said King.
About an hour in the families raft came around a bend where they spotted some more rapids ahead. The families raft passed over a couple more rapids before hitting a big one causing the raft to pop up hard. Once the raft hit Oscar and his mom both flew out. Oscar mom was quickly rescued but oscar was know where to be found. Next to the raft was a tree with about a foot under the boat and water. Oscar's life jacket had been caught in the roots causing him to drown under the boat. "After I couldn't free myself I began to panic" Said King, "Just the thought of losing your life when there is nothing you can do to save it." Luckily for king a group of Eagle Scouts were on the bank next to the tree he was trapped under.
One of the scouts had a rope tied around the tree which he tied to his waist in order to keep himself from being sucked under. Once closer to the water the scouts were able to free Oscar from the roots and save his life. "Of all the places I have been I am surprised my own country tried to kill me." Said King.
Oscar says he does not planning on slowing down one bit. He continues to love the outdoors and plans on taking many more expeditions around the U.S. and World. He is currently studying journalism at the University of Mississippi and would like to travel the world reporting for a living.
